Biobased Interior Doors

Together with GreenInclusive (Drachten), Miedema Bouwmaterialen (Leeuwarden), SAM Panels (Venlo), and DW Bouw (Nieuwehorne), we are proud to announce the successful development and delivery of innovative biobased interior doors—partially made from hemp fiber grown by Frisian farmers. This project is a great example of innovation and sustainability in practice, marking an important step forward for the construction sector in reducing the environmental footprint of buildings and promoting the use of locally sourced natural materials.

The first series of these sustainable interior doors has already been installed in the biobased demonstration home in Nieuwehorne, designed by Achterbosch Architects from Leeuwarden. This project not only demonstrates the feasibility of using biobased materials in modern construction, but also serves as an inspiring milestone within the broader circular economy.

Towards a Sustainable Construction Economy

“This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when passionate innovators and doers from different sectors come together,” says Marthijs Roorda, Managing Director of GreenInclusive. “Our partnership with Miedema Bouwmaterialen, Van Vuuren, SAM Panels, and DW Bouw, supported by Vereniging Circulair Friesland, has once again enabled us to contribute to a more sustainable construction economy here in Fryslân.”

The collaboration between these Frisian companies was initiated by Nick Boersma, Program Manager at Vereniging Circulair Friesland, where sustainable construction is a key focus under the initiative ‘Friesland bouwt circulair’ (Friesland builds circular).

High-Quality Interior Doors

Van Vuuren manufactures these interior doors at their production facility in Grou, and they are seeing plenty of opportunities to increase production to meet the growing demand for biobased construction products. “We’ve invested a lot of time and energy into creating a high-quality interior door that uses local natural resources,” says Stephan Tjepkema, representing Van Vuuren. “We are pleased to monitor the doors in a real-world setting, like in Nieuwehorne. If everything goes well, we plan to further develop the product and hope to include this biobased option in our permanent range of products.”

About the Partners

The partners involved are committed to the development of sustainable building and insulation materials that can be widely applied, benefiting the (agricultural) construction sector, the environment, and the Frisian economy.

Van Vuuren is responsible for the actual production of the doors. With Van Vuuren's extensive knowledge and expertise in the door industry, they are able to create complete doors from the biobased interior panels by SAM Panels that meet both quality and aesthetic standards. Van Vuuren plays a critical role in turning innovative concepts into practical, usable products.

GreenInclusive is a pioneer in promoting sustainable building solutions in the Netherlands, focused on reducing the ecological footprint of buildings by using biobased materials made from locally sourced natural resources.

SAM Panels has contributed by processing materials supplied by GreenInclusive into high-quality interior panels. These panels are the essential building blocks of the biobased interior doors, with an emphasis on quality and sustainability.

Miedema Bouwmaterialen is a comprehensive supplier of a wide range of (biobased) construction and insulation materials. Miedema is responsible for the sales and distribution of the finished doors. Their extensive network and experience in the construction materials sector ensure that these innovative doors find their way into projects and eventually reach consumers across the Netherlands.

DW Bouw is responsible for constructing the biobased house in Nieuwehorne and has the crucial task of installing the doors at the final users' sites. Their precision and craftsmanship in door installation ensure that the integrity and functionality of the biobased products are fully realized.
